Ekiti State Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Mr.
Foluso Daramola has appealed to parents and guardians of children in
public schools in the state to consistently perform the roles expected
of them in the educational pursuit of their children or wards.
The Commissioner made the appeal during a meeting with the Education
Stakeholders in Ado-Ekiti.
Mr. Daramola, who explained that though Executive order 001 of October
2018, abolished all forms of levies and taxes in public schools in the
state, parents and guardians are still expected to provide school
uniforms, shoes, books and some essential needs for their children or
wards.
He stated that parents and guardians still have to complement the
efforts of the State Government in its free and compulsory education
policy which is by providing basic learning materials for their
children or wards.
The Commissioner noted that some parents and guardians seemed to have
misunderstood the content of Executive order 001 by not willing to
play any role in the education of their children and wards.
He however warned public school administrators in the state against
sending any pupils out of school due to inability of their parents to
pay the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) levies in their various
schools.
He also called on PTA Executives to fashion out modalities to collect
such money without affecting the teaching and learning of the
students.
Mr. Daramola disclosed that the Running Grants to schools would be
reviewed upward as from 2019/2020 academic session to cater for sundry
expenses in the public schools across the state.
The Commissioner informed the Stakeholders in the Education sector
that the State Government had commenced the process of Recruiting 2000
Teachers this year to fill part of the existing vacancies in both
public primary and secondary schools in the state.
He announced that the recruitment to public schools in the state will
be an annual exercise, adding that all their requests will be
forwarded to the appropriate quarters for necessary action and
directive.
In her remarks, the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic
Education Board (SUBEB), Professor Francisca Aladejana explained that
the purpose of convening the meeting was to fashion out and suggest
how to improve the standard of education in the state.
She said that the State Government will soon embark on massive
infrastructural development in schools across the state in order to
make teaching and learning environment more conducive for students in
their various schools.
Professor Aladejana cautioned School Administrators and PTAs not to
exploit parents and guardians of pupils in the state, adding that no
staff should be involved in the process of collection of PTA funds
from pupils.
She stressed that PTA funds must be paid into the PTA Account of its
school and must be properly managed.
The SUBEB boss informed the meeting that Inter-house Sports
Competition will hold in all public schools in the state and parents
must provide sport wears for their children and wards for the events.
President of the Association of School Principals (ANCOPS), Mr. Biodun
Omotoso made it known that government alone cannot fund education
without parents making contributions to funding the education of their
children.
He implored the State Government on the other hand, to strive to
ensure quality education in public schools as this will complement the
efforts of parents towards contributing to the funding of their
children’s education.
The ANCOPS President also pleaded the State Government to promote
eligible Principals in the state to grade level 17, adding that some
of the Principals have been stagnated for over 10years on the same
grade level (grade level 16).
Also speaking, the State Chairman of the PTA, Chief Osadare Samuel
Adeola, called on the State Government to allow parents and guardians,
who have children in public schools to pay the sum of five hundred
naira as PTA Levy, Internal Examination Fee, six hundred naira per
term and the sum of five hundred naira for Afternoon Lessons to make
it a sum of one thousand six hundred naira per term.
Chief Osadare requested that the State Government allows public
schools administrators to produce school uniforms for students to
ensure uniformity, adding that parents should be ready to pay for
such service.
